Free-free and recombination radiation from massive star-forming regions

چکیده

The contribution of free-free and recombination radiation to the IR emission from regions of massive star formation is investigated. A method for calculating Gaunt factors for free-free emission from a hydrogenic non-relativistic gas is employed and the results are compared with approximation formula from the literature. While the cooling of ionized star forming regions due to free-free and free-bound transitions emerges in the MIR, which is dominated by dust emission, the overall cooling is mainly provided by line emission of heavier elements. Only in metal-free and therefore dust-free H ii regions can freefree and free-bound radiation become dominant. We investigate the global energy balance of those regions and determine temperatures of the ionized gas, which are in general 2 to 8 times larger than found in present day star forming regions of massive stars.

Too large and overlooked? Extended free-free emission towards massive star formation regions

We present Australia Telescope Compact Array observations towards 6 massive star formation regions which, from their strong 24GHz continuum emission but no compact 8GHz continuum emission, appeared good candidates for hyper-compact HII regions. However, the properties of the ionised gas derived from the 19 to 93GHz continuum emission and H70α + H57α radio recombination line data show the majori...

The Formation of Massive Stars from Turbulent Cores

Observations indicate that massive stars in the Galaxy form in regions of very high surface density, Σ ∼ 1 g cm−2. Clusters containing massive stars and globular clusters have a column density comparable to this. The gas pressure in clouds of such a column density is P/k ∼ 108 − 109 K cm−3, far greater than that in the diffuse interstellar medium or the average in giant molecular clouds. Observ...

Thermal Emission from HII Galaxies: Discovering the Youngest Systems

We studied the radio properties of very young massive regions of star formation in HII galaxies, with the aim of detecting episodes of recent star formation in an early phase of evolution where the first supernovae start to appear. Our sample consists of 31 HII galaxies, characterized by strong Hydrogen emission lines, for which low resolution VLA 3.5 cm and 6 cm observations were obtained. We ...

On the Early Evolution of Young Starbursts

We studied the radio properties of very young massive regions of star formation in HII galaxies, with the aim of detecting episodes of recent star formation in an early phase of evolution where the first supernovae start to appear. The observed radio spectral energy distribution (SED) covers a behaviour range; 1) there are galaxies where the SED is characterized by a synchrotron-type slope, 2) ...

Gamma rays from star-forming regions

Star-forming regions have been tentatively associated with gamma-ray sources since the early days of the COS B satellite. After the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, the statistical evidence for such an association has became overwhelming. Recent results from Cherenkov telescopes indicate that some high-energy sources are produced in regions of active star formation like Cygnus OB2 and Westerlund ...
